摘要|Abstract
This paper systematically analyzes the effect of urban sprawl on urban climate within Chinese cities. Most Chinese cities have experienced great urban sprawl in the past several decades. Due to the heat-island effect, the continuous urban sprawl may contribute to the rising of urban temperature in Chinese cities. This paper shows that urban sprawl has a significantly positive effect on urban temperature. Specifically, a ten percent increase in the area size of a city’s built-up area will increase the urban maximum temperature in summer by 0.017 Celsius degree and the number of hot days by 0.16. However, the related effect on precipitation is not statistically significant. Further analysis suggests that urban sprawl also reduces the frequency of temperature inversion in urban areas. Different robustness checks also support these findings. The results in this paper suggest that the climate variables may be endogenous to economic activities.
